Getting Started

Some women know that they want to start their own business when they are in primary school. For others it happens much later in life, either when they have been ground down by the drudgery and lack of appreciation offered by their current job, or when circumstances force them to make a change.

When an economy is as fragile as it is in the UK just now, people, and women in particular, tend to be reluctant, even afraid to start a new business. Yet in reality, a weak ecopnomy might just offer the perfect opportunity to start your own business.

Starting your business in the current climate forces you to be cautious with your spending, and that's a good discipline to get into. For any business to succeed your costs must be controlled and when cash is hard to come by, it's not difficult to control costs.

It's also a great time for you to find good deals on services and supplies as other businesses are prepared to negotiate much more than they would have been a year ago.  With some shrewd negotiating you can obtain much better prices on things like advertising, rent and business services.

Starting a business now also forces you to do your homework. You need to find a business idea that can work in weak economy, and if it can work now,  the chances are it has the potential to be a successful long-term business.

Some of the best entrepeuners in the world thrive in weak ecopnomioes - they see the opportunities and they seize them. You can do the same.

Getting started now can give you a massive advantage over the competition. There are probaly many others sitting just now thinking about starting a business and holding back because they are scared about the prospects in the current financial climate. By getting in now, and taking advantage of the opportunities, you can gain a massive head start.

And if you don't have a business in mind., look around the marketplace for a business to buy. There are some great opportunities for women just now with a a number of female orientated franchises on offer. And if franchising is too costly or constraijing there are a couple of excellent business model and support packages avaliable. Either way the extra support can get you up and running quickly and give you that little bit of extra confidence that there is someone to help out if you need them.

Women have so much to offer as business owners. We are natural networkers - a fundamental skill in any business. We also tend to have great customer service and organisational skills - and multi-tasking??

What we lack in many cases is the confidence to take that first step, but there is plenty of support out there if you need it. The Business Womans café is a wonderful medium for meeting, learning and sharing, and youshould have no difficulty in finding local womens networking groups which will give you the opportunity to learn and get support from others.

So don't use the current climate as an excuse for not taking the first steps. If you do not try - you will never know what you could have achieved.
